C e c y T u r n e r F i n e A r t New Work on Website! I hope you'll take a look at my new work I've added to my website since my last newsletter. See this one under Flowers and Still Lifes: Yellow Poinsettia "Yellow Poinsettia" 15 x 11 Watercolor Question Answered: In my December newsletter, I told you that I'd address some questions I'm asked frequently, especially if you weren't able to attend my annual Open Studio and ask me questions yourself. One I get asked often is, "How do you decide what to paint?" That is a tough one, because it has many answers depending on what day it is or how I feel that day! The one common thread, though, is that every painting I do starts with an idea. It could be that I'm dying to try out a new color and see what it will do ("Yellow Poinsettias" was painted partly because of this), but most often it's the idea of how the light plays on different things in the landscape (the other reason for "Yellow Poinsettias" - the beautiful light and shadows on them when I set them up outdoors). It could be that seeing another artist's work in a magazine reminds me of photos I took on a trip and I dig them out to revisit them and get totally excited about painting one of them; it could be driving down a road in Rocky Mountain National Park, which I do often, and notice the light hitting some aspens like I've never seen it do before; it could be driving down the same kind of road in the cold months there and seeing the light coming from behind some snow covered pine trees and just HAVING to try and capture this on canvas...the list goes on and on. If I get so excited when I see something like this that I want to jump out of the car, I just know I have to paint this! I believe that without a connection or emotion behind what I paint, I'm just painting a thing to be painting it. So, I try not to do that. And, I try my best to keep the idea or emotion I want to convey first in my mind while painting. In next month's newsletter, I'll answer another frequently asked question, or, I'd love for you to email me a question to address!
