"Fortress Cliffs at Sunset" Palo Duro Canyon in Canyon, TX, has become one of my favorite places to paint. It has taken YEARS to halfway "get the hang of" painting it. I just had to keep on trying. The secret is, I think, to not paint the formations as orange as they look! I tend to see a lot of color, but once I started using more grays and muted colors, it seemed to work a lot better. However, at sunset, "The Fortress" turns an electric light orange! This color only lasted about ten minutes, so I had to go back three times to complete this painting! But, it was worth it. What a beautiful sight. I painted this on an Outdoor Painters Society trip in November.
